Past Events:
Hellanback
Ranch bottled wine on March 20. Brother Alan and his wife Janice, and brother Richard and his wife Mary joined John
and Paula for a full day of bottling the 2009 Hellanback Blanc, the 2008 Adobe cabernet sauvignon, and a 2008 blend, called
Heritage. While captive, John and Paula also had the family work on pruning the vineyards! It was lots of fun
(that's what John keeps telling them anyway) and there was lots of eating and wine tasting.
John
has been conducting food and wine pairing, using only local wines - wine made in San Diego County, from grapes grown in San
Diego County. The events have been hosted by Peter and Denise Clarke at their beautiful home in the San Pasqual Valley.
The dinners are by invitation only and have been a huge success. The Clarke's dinning room table sits 24 people.
Different chefs were used for each 5 course dinner. John has been able to find excellent local wines from all parts
of the county for these dinners. The primary purpose of the dinners is to promote local wine.
The
2009 RVVA Summer Social was a huge success, and bigger and better than last year's social. Over 100 people
came to share wine and food this year. Once again, John cooked "famous" Hellanback beef burgers on the grill,
with the help of several lovely assistants. There were many local wines there to be tasted.
This year we sponsored a wine contest. It was "reds only", one bottle per winery, amateur and
professional competing side by side. Mario and Diana Bergeron created a special etched wine bottles as the first, second
and third place "trophies". Paula also created the "coveted Hellanback Ranch Horseshoe Award" for
each place!
Upcoming Events:
John and Paula are hosting the 2010 RVVA Summer Social again on July 17. Hamburgers made with Hellanback
beef will be on the menu again this year. The second annual Summer Social wine contest will also take place, as entrants
vie for the "coveted Hellanback Horseshoe Award".
John and Paula are going
on vacation this summer to Key West with their friends and neighbors Bill and Mary Ann Middleton. It's been a few years
since they last made the trip. Did you know that they make wine in Key West? Well, they call it wine - kiwi wine.
